FISH-NL challenges FFAW (a.k.a. ‘salt-water mafia’) to province-wide debate

The Federation of Independent Sea Harvesters of Newfoundland and Labrador (FISH-NL) is challenging the FFAW to a public debate on the representation of the province’s fish harvesters.

“Fish harvesters deserve answers, honesty, and a clear vision for the future — not yet more FFAW lies and deception,” says Ryan Cleary, president of FISH-NL. “Harvesters do not trust the FFAW, or, as the union is better known these days, the ‘salt-water mafia.’”

FFAW members are being told that FISH-NL supports an end to the northern cod stewardship fishery, the demise of fishing EI, and is funded by the offshore sector. 

“That’s outright deception,” says Cleary. “The FFAW is about smears and fear mongering, refusing to respond to the legitimate concerns of its membership.”

Concerns have been raised over secrecy surrounding revenues from the Fish Harvesters’ Resource Centres (FRC), the union-controlled dock-side monitoring company, as well as the so-called shrimp slush fund, the executive pension plan, union vehicles, out-of-control fees and charges, and a myriad of conflicts of interest. 

“Harvesters do not trust the FFAW for good reason,” says Cleary. “The union has mutated into a business that prospers as the fishery dies at its feet.”

Making this a better place I applaud Ryan Cleary’s letter in the Oct. 31 Weekend Telegram (“Time to act, not talk”) touting teamwork as the key to forging a future for rural Newfoundland: it was eerily reflective of the premier’s front-page interview. It’s a prime example on how we all could, and should, put partisan politics and prejudices aside to perpetuate the one commonality that binds us — passion for the promise of this place.   FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—Wednesday, May 26th, 2021 The Seaward Enterprises Association, Newfoundland Labrador (SEA-NL) calls on the federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to reverse her decision to limit the increase to the 2021 northern shrimp quota off southern Labrador and northeastern Newfoundland.   “DFO went outside its own rule book to limit the increase to this year’s quota, which will translate into the loss of more than 2,000 tonnes of shrimp to the province’s inshore fleet,” says Ryan Cleary, interim Executive Director of SEA-NL, a new association to represent the province’s more than 3,000 independent owner-operators. “Enterprise owners are being punished for their sacrifices and Mother Nature’s turnaround.
